Mecklenburg Vorpommern — State With Countless Lakes
Mecklenburg Vorpommern is a state located in northern Germany.
It is one of the least densely populated states though the sixth largest by area. Its capital is Schwerin.
Mecklenburg Western Pomeronia, which is the actual English name of Mecklenburg Vorpommern, shares it northern border with the Baltic Sea and the eastern border with Poland.
Popular tourist attractions of Mecklenburg Vorpommern are the coastline of Baltic Sea, numerous islands and the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Also, the oldest German universities are here — the universities of Greifswald and Rostock.
Important cities include Rostock, Schwerin, Neubrandenburg, Stralsund, Greifswald and Wismar. Rostock, the largest city of the state, has a population of 200,000.
Mecklenburg Vorpommern's two towns — Wismar and Stralsund — have earned the status of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Wismar is a small port, about 45 km east of Lübeck. The town has a natural harbour, located in the Bay of Wismar. Stralsund is located at the southern coast of the Strelasund.
Rügen, nation's largest island, is also in Mecklenburg Western Pomeronia. It is accessible by a very long rail-road bridge known as Rügendamm. There is also a ferry service to the island from Stralsund, Greifswald and Wolgast.
Other islands in the state include Hiddensee, Usedom and Poel. Mecklenburg Vorpommern is also known as the state of thousand lakes. There are several lakes in the southern region of the state, the largest being Lake Müritz.
Mecklenburg Western Pomeronia boasts of a total number of 283 nature reserves, 110 landscape reserves and three national parks. Jasmund National Park and Müritz National Park are the two most popular national parks. The Jasmund National Park is famous for the largest chalk cliffs of Germany. Famous species in the Müritz National Park include red deer, crane, and white-tailed eagle.
All cities of Mecklenburg Vorpommern display a "Hanseatic" building style, which is also found in countries like Estonia and Latvia. There were Gothic red brick churches built in the medieval era.
The state has about 2,000 castles, palaces and historical monuments. And there are several museums and art galleries, such as the Deutsches Meeresmuseum (German Maritime Museum) and the invaluable Deutsches Bernsteinmuseum (German Amber Museum).
You can enjoy open air concerts and operas during the summer season. Notable amongst them is Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Music Festival of MV) offering classical concerts.
Mecklenburg Lake District offer you an opportunity to relax by indulging in fishing and sailing in its numerous lakes. For sport lovers, popular destinations are football club Hansa Rostock and the international sailing affair Hanse Sail.
Majority of natives of Mecklenburg Vorpommern speak High German but a small section of the population also speaks Low German (Niederdeutsch), which is a bit harder to understant.
Regarding English, approach younger people and you'll be able to chat in English with them. Most of the older ones "forgot" this language since they've been out of school, so...
