Baden Wurttemberg — Where The Automobile Was Invented
In the early 20th century, during 1918 and 1919, there were talks of merger of Baden and Württemberg, but all these remained unsuccessful.
Under German Federal law, a referendum was held in 1951 for the creation of this state. It was passed by the both districts participating in the referendum. As a result of this referendum, the state of Baden Wurttemberg (German: Baden-Württemberg) was created in 1952, with Stuttgart as its capital.
Summer nights are warm in the Black Forest's Rhine plain. The Black Forest, an area of forest-covered hills and valleys peppered with walking trails, also produces the cuckoo clocks that are associated with Germany.
But in the nearby mountains, which rise up to 1,200 m, the mercury dips alarmingly. This contrast is one of its major attractions.
Baden Wurttemberg lies in the southwest between Lake Constance, Germany's largest lake known locally as the Swabian Sea, and the river Main.
Stuttgart, the capital, is a green city of parks and lakes, with a beguiling ambience that mixes the rural and the urban into a highly satisfying whole.
Mainly well-known for its football stadium called Gottlieb-Daimler-
Stadion — even if you're not a football fan — there are plenty of other attractions on offer in Stuttgart, including castles, parks, architecture, art, culture, museums and musicals.
There's history in the form of the late Gothic Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) in the heart of the city, which represents old Stuttgart. The church borders Schillerplatz in the middle of which stands the Schiller Memorial, officially unveiled in 1839 as a symbol of bourgeois freedom.
Stuttgart Old Castle (Altes Schloss) of the 16th century stands where horses belonging to Duke Luitolf of Swabia once grazed. The name and coat of arms of the city are derived from the word "stuotgarten" or stud.
There's culture galore, including the Stuttgart Opera House, which won the Opera House of the Year critic's prize every year from 1998 to 2002, and the famed Stuttgart Ballet, founded by renowned choreographer John Cranko. Meanwhile, lovers of the arts can enjoy exceptional museums, including the Stuttgart State Gallery, which includes works by Rembrandt, Rodin, Cezanne, Picasso and Andy Warhol.
Today, more than 110 years of automotive history are displayed on three floors in the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The exhibits include the world's first motor vehicles of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, the first Mercedes and another 80 milestones which tell the Mercedes story thoroughly and in all its glory.
Located on the premises of the traditional plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, the Mercedez-Benz Museum has been attracting visitors from all over the world ever since 1923, pulling in more than 420,000 motor fans a year.
The state of Baden Wurttemberg is located in the heart of Europe and so it becomes very easily accessible for tourists. France is located to its west and Switzerland to its south.
If you want to unwind or to get fit, this state definitely has something for everybody. Also, moving around the State is quite easy as it has a well-maintained public transport system and smooth, well-connected roads.
Now, would you do me a favor, please? Once you've been to this state, would you please go ahead and tell me your own Baden Wurttemberg story?
Thanks in advance!
