Built from 1756 to 1773, Schloss Benrath (Benrath Palace) was built as a pleasure and hunting palace for the Elector Karl Theodor.

Nicolas de Pigage created one of the most beautiful garden palaces of the 18th century. The ensemble with its artistic harmony of buildings, interior design and gardens (60 hectares in size) is considered to be one of Europe's rare total works of art of the late rococo period.

The Benrath Palace building consists of main building, eastern and western wings, the two gate houses and four guard houses are in excellent repair. A tour of the main palace (corps de logis) with its exhibits of furniture, porcelaine, paintings etc. gives an impression of court life during the second half of the 18th century.

I further recommend to visit the Naturkundemuseum (museum of natural science) in the west wing of Schloss Benrath, and the Museum für Europäische Gartenkunst (museum of European garden history) in the east wing.

The baroque park bordering the Rhine was also designed by Nicolas de Pigage, and the Elector's private garden was transformed into an English garden by Maximilian Weyhe and Peter Joseph Lenné.

After this step back in history there's another historical place on our city tour, the Castle Tower...
