The Dortmund Stadium or Westfalenstadion
The Dortmund Stadium, also considered as Westfalen-stadion, was opened 1974 in the context of the Fifa World Cup 1974, which was hosted in Germany as well, with a spectator capacity of 54,000.
It served as one of twelve venues for the Fifa World Cup 2006.
It is south the federal highway B1 at the Strobelallee beside the athletik stadium "Rote Erde," and is the homeland of the BV Borussia Dortmund soccer club (BVB).
In 1999, the grandstands were successively supplemented. From 2003 to2004, the stadium corners were extended. The current spectator capacity amounts to 83,000 spectators (however, for the World Cup 2006, the capacity is 66,981). Thus the Westfalenstadion is the largest football arena of Germany.
A further superlativ represents the south grandstand. With 25,000 places, it is the largest standing place grandstand of Europe.
The faithful fans of Borussia Dortmund in the Dortmund Stadium have the highest spectator cut of Europe. In the season 2003/2004, they made with 1,35 million spectators (almost 80,000 per match) a new Bundesliga- and European wide record.
Considered as the opera-house of the Bundesliga, the Westfalenstadion almost always is filled with a yellow-black "sell-out crowd" that loves the club and its players.
